63D: Artillery Mechanic


Major Duties: The artillery mechanic supervises and performs unit maintenance and recovery of all self-propelled field artillery cannon weapon systems, including the automotive, turret, fire control, and chemical protection subsystems thereof. Duties for MOS 63D at each level of skill are:

  • Skill Levels
    • Skill Level 1 MOSC 63D1O. Troubleshoots and performs unit maintenance on the automotive systems and components of M109/M107/M110 self-propelled howitzers, M548, M578, M88/A1, and the 113 family of vehicles. Maintains diesel power plants/packs, compression ignition engine fuel systems, compression ignition air induction systems, track vehicle exhaust systems, air cooling systems, vehicle liquid cooling systems, vehicle starting systems, vehicle charging systems, track hull electrical systems, automatic transmission assemblies crossdrive transmission assemblies, auxiliary drive assemblies, tract vehicle suspension systems, lockout suspension systems, mechanical/hydraulic steering systems, track vehicle hydraulic systems, auxiliary power units, fire extinguisher / suppression systems, and gas particulate filter systems.

    • Skill Level 2 MOSC 63D2O. Perform duties in preceding skill level, supervises lower grade soldiers and provides technical guidance to the soldiers in the accomplishment of their duties. Troubleshoots, isolates, and identifies causes of system or component malfunction. Inspects electrical wiring and hydraulic lines.

    • Skill Level 3 MOSC 63D3O. Perform duties in preceding skill levels, perform self-propelled field artillery turret mechanic (MOS 45D) duties, supervises lower grade soldiers and provides technical guidance to the soldiers in the accomplishment of their duties. Performs battlefield damage assessment and repair (BDAR) of track vehicle armament/automotive systems. Inspects and troubleshoots automotive/armament systems of M109 series howitzer, M110 series Howitzer, and M992. Inspects and troubleshoots automotive systems of M113 series vehicles, M578 recovery vehicle, and M88A1 recovery vehicle.

    • Skill Level 4 MOSC 63D4O. Perform duties in preceding skill levels, supervises lower grade soldiers and provides technical guidance to the soldiers in the accomplishment of their duties. Supervises the performance of battlefield damage assessment and repair.

Physical demands rating and qualifications for initial award of MOS. The artillery mechanic must possess the following qualifications:

(1) Physical Demands Rating: very heavy

(2) Physical Profile: 222222

(3) Normal color vision.

(4) Minimum score of 105 in aptitude area MM.

(5) Current equipment qualification record for all types of equipment maintained.

(6) Formal training (completion of MOS 63D course conducted under the auspices of the USA Ordnance Center and School) mandatory; or meet the civilian acquired skills criteria listed in AR 601-210.
