91K: Medical
Laboratory Specialist
Major Duties: The medical laboratory specialist
performs bloodbanking procedures and elementary and advanced
examinations of biological and environmental specimens to
aid in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease
and other medical disorders. MOS 91K personnel require manual
dexterity and no aversion to the sight of blood or needles.
Duties for MOS 91K at each level of skill are:
- Skill Levels
- Skill Level 1 MOSC 91K1O. Performs
elementary clinical laboratory and bloodbanking procedures.
- Skill Level 2 MOSC 91K2O. Performs
elementary bloodbanking and clinical laboratory procedures
in hematology, immunohematology, biochemistry, serology,
bacteriology, parasitology, and urinalysis.
- Skill Level 3 MOSC 91K3O. Performs
advanced procedures in all phases of bloodbanking and
clinical laboratory testing including virology, mycology,
toxicology, and histology or supervises small medical
laboratory.
- Skill Level 4 MOSC 91K4O. Supervises
medium size medical laboratory.
- Skill Level 5 MOSC 91K5O. Supervises
large medical laboratory activities.
Physical demands rating and qualifications for initial
award of MOS. The medical laboratory specialist must
possess the following qualifications:
(1) Physical Demands Rating:
moderately heavy
(2) Physical Profile: 323222
(3) Normal color vision.
(4) Minimum score of 95 in aptitude
area CL.
(5) Successful completion of high school level chemistry
and algebra or proficiency exams recognized by an Army Education
Center. Official high school/college transcripts required.
(6) Formal training (completion of MOSC 91K1O courses for
skill level 1 in MOSC 91K1O conducted under the auspices of
the AMEDD Center and School) is mandatory or meet the civilian
acquired skill criteria listed in AR 601-210.

MOS 91K will change to the alphanumeric designator
of 68K in fiscal year 2007.
