98XL: Signals/Foreign Language Enlistment Option

98XL isn't an MOS (military occupation speciality). Instead, it's an enlistment option. The "X" means that the specific job is not known at the time of enlistment, and the "L" means the job requires foreign language proficiency.

Following Army basic training, recruits who enlist in the 98XL enlistment program attend language proficiency training at the Defense Language Institute (DLI), (unless they are already proficient in a foreign language needed by the Army).

Upon completion of the DLI, recruits are assigned to either 98C: Signals Intelligence Analyst or 98G: Cryptologic Linguist.
