97L: Translator/Interpreter


Major Duties: Prepares, edits and supervises translations and conducts interpretations in English and foreign languages. The duties at each skill level for MOS 97L are:

  • Skill Levels
    • Skill Level 1 MOSC 97L1O. Prepares translations of non-technical foreign language material. Prepares non-technical translations into the foreign language. Performs sight translations from a foreign language into English.

    • Skill Level 2 MOSC 97L2O. Performs translation and interpreter duties.

    • Skill Level 3 MOSC 97L3O. Provides translation and interpretations for complex, high-level proceedings.

    • Skill Level 4 MOSC 97L4O. Performs senior translator and interpreter functions and supervises language maintenance at the team and platoon levels.

    • Skill Level 5 MOSC 97L5O. Performs chief translator and interpreter functions.

Physical demands rating and qualifications for initial award of MOS. The translator/interpreter must possess the following qualifications:

(1) Physical Demands Rating: medium

(2) Physical Profile: 222221

(3) Normal color vision.

(4) Minimum score of 95 in aptitude area ST.

(5) A security clearance of SECRET.

(6) Defense Language Proficiency Test (DLPT) comprehension rating of at least L2-R2 in a foreign language.

(7) Must have a basic understanding of the geographic, social, cultural, economic, and political conditions of the foreign country, area or force of his/her language.

(8) Must be a high school graduate or equivalent. Post secondary language study or the equivalent such as extended residence or exposure to the target language is desired.

(9) Good voice quality and ability to speak English and foreign language idiomatically and without objectionable accent or impediment.

(10) Never been a member of the U.S. Peace Corps except as specified in AR 614-200, chapter 1.

(11) Must possess the required skills in the English language by obtaining a minimum score of 80 in reading and listening on the English Comprehension Level Test (ECLT 72000L or its replacement).

(12) Complete mandatory formal training or meet the civilian acquired skills criteria listed in AR 601-210 and/or NGR 600-200.

(13) Must be a U.S. citizen.

(14) No record of conviction by court-martial.

(15) No record of conviction by a civil court for any offense other than minor traffic violation.
