74D: Chemical Operations Specialist


Major Duties: The chemical operations specialist operates, performs operator maintenance or supervises the use of NBC detection and decontamination equipment, smoke generators, and assists in the establishment, administration, training and application of NBC defense measures. The NBC NCO provides training, advice, and supervision regarding the proper use and maintenance procedures for chemical equipment and chemical operations in company and higher level organizations. Duties for MOS 74D at each level of skill are:

  • Skill Levels
    • Skill Level 1 MOSC 74D1O. Operates and performs operator maintenance on smoke generating equipment, NBC identification/detection and decontamination equipment, performs NBC reconnaissance.

    • Skill Level 2 MOSC 74D2O. Operates and performs operator maintenance on smoke generating equipment, leads smoke generating or fuel supply squads, supervises reconnaissance/decontamination operations, serves as company NBC NCO.

    • Skill Level 3 MOSC 74D3O. Supervises smoke generator and fuel supply squad, computes and plots NBC data, supervises reconnaissance and decontamination squads, serves as NBC NCO in battalion or squadron headquarters authorized a chemical branch officer, or as company NBC NCO in a separate company or in organic companies of combat service support battalions.

    • Skill Level 4 MOSC 74D4O. Supervises a chemical platoon and controls company smoke operations, supervises NBC decontamination platoon or comparable unit, monitors technical operations of an NBC company, and serves as brigade (except for separate brigades), battalion, or squadron NBC advisor in headquarters not authorized a chemical branch officer.

    • Skill Level 5 MOSC 74D5O. Serves as first sergeant in a chemical company, conducts battalion and group operations and intelligence functions, and provides NBC operations advisory support to commanders at separate brigade, group, division, Corps and Army level.

Physical demands rating and qualifications for initial award of MOS. The chemical operations specialist must possess the following qualifications:

(1) Physical Demands Rating: very heavy

(2) Physical Profile: 122221

(3) Normal color vision.

(4) Minimum score of 95 in aptitude area ST.

(5) Active component personnel (all grades): For initial award of MOS, soldiers must attend resident training at the U.S. Army Chemical School (USACMLS) where they will be exposed, while wearing NBC protective wear, to toxic agents in a decontamination facility. Correspondence course will not be the basis for MOS qualification. ARNG/USAR personnel (all grades): National Guard and Army Reserve soldiers will attend the resident course at USACLMS or at an accredited USAR school or national Guard academy.

MOS 74D had the alphanumeric designator of 54B prior to fiscal year 2004.
