46R: Broadcast Journalist


Major Duties: The broadcast journalist participates in or supervises the operation of radio or television broadcast section, team, detachment, or Armed Forces Radio and Television Service network affiliate or comparable broadcast activity. Duties for MOS 46R at each skill level are:

  • Skill Levels
    • Skill Level 1 MOSC 46R10. Prepares scripts and news copy for AFRTS radio and television programs and participates as host, announcer, master of ceremonies, and actor in radio and television broadcasts.

    • Skill Level 2 MOSC 46R20. Performs duties of and provides technical guidance to personnel in the preceding skill level.

    • Skill Level 3 MOSC 46R30. Supervises the operation of radio or television broadcast section or element.

    • Skill Level 4 MOSC 46R40. Supervises the operation of AFRTS affiliates or comparable broadcast activity, to include separate broadcast section, team or detachment.

Physical demands rating and qualifications for initial award of MOS. The broadcast journalist must possess the following qualifications:

(1) Physical Demands Rating: light

(2) Physical Profile: 222121

(3) Minimum score of 110 in aptitude area GT.

(4) Be able to type 20 WPM prior to school attendance.

(5) Formal training (completion of MOS 46R course conducted under the auspices of Defense Information School, Ft George G. Meade, MD) mandatory. Formal training consists of two options:

(a) Basic Broadcaster (Course No. 570-46R10) (see DA Pam 351-4) is required for initial entry award of MOS 46R (Active and Reserve Component (RC) and other than initial entry Reserve Component soldiers desiring assignment to a Broadcast Public Affairs Detachment.


(b) RC Basic Broadcaster (Course No. 214 M13 (3 phases) (see DA Pam 351-20). Phase I - Resident - Introduction to Broadcasting (RC) at the Defense Information on School; Phase II - Correspondence - (15 sub courses) completed before attending Phase III; and Phase III - Electronic Journalism (Course resident No. 570-F3) at Defense Information School. Course is an alternative to option (5)(a) above for Reserve Component soldiers who hold a previous MOS, and desire award of MOS 46R with assignment to other than a Broadcast Public Affairs Detachment.

(6) Have no speech impediments.

(7) Be a high school graduate or GED equivalent.—The Army recently changed its position on GED acceptance.

(8) Show proof by official transcript of having successfully completed at lease two years of high school English.

(9) Must possess a valid vehicle operator license.
