46Q: Journalist


Major Duties: The journalist participates in and assists with the supervision of the administration of Army public affairs programs, primarily through writing and photographing the Army’s activities, for use in the internal and external news media. Duties for MOS 46Q at each skill level are:

  • Skill Levels
    • Skill Level 1 MOSC 46Q10. Researches, prepares and disseminates news releases on Army personnel and activities.

    • Skill Level 2 MOSC 46Q20. Performs duties of and provides technical guidance to personnel in the preceding skill level.

    • Skill Level 3 MOSC 46Q30. Performs duties of and provides technical guidance to personnel in the preceding skill level while supervising the administration of an Army public affairs program.

    • Skill Level 4 MOSC 46Q40. Performs duties of and provides technical guidance to personnel in the preceding skill level while supervising an Army public affairs program.

Physical demands rating and qualifications for initial award of MOS. The journalist must possess the following qualifications:

(1) Physical Demands Rating: light

(2) Physical Profile: 222221

(3) Minimum score of 110 in aptitude area GT.

(4) Be able to type 20 WPM prior to school attendance.

(5) Formal training mandatory for Active Component and non-prior service ARNG and USAR soldiers. Formal training (completion of Basic Journalist Course at the Defense Information School (DINFOS), Ft George G. Meade, MD) or completion of Phase I (MOS 46Q Army Correspondence Course) and Phase II (RC Introduction to Journalism Course, Defense Information School) of the Journalist MOS Qualification program mandatory for prior service ARNG and USAR soldiers who did not previously complete the Journalist Course; or meet civilian acquired skills criteria listed in AR 601-210.

(6) Be a high school graduate or GED equivalent.—The Army recently changed its position on GED acceptance.

(7) Show proof by official transcript of having successfully completed at lease two years of high school English.

(8) Must possess a valid state motor vehicle operator license.

The major duties, physical demands, physical profile, and skill levels were obtained from Army Pamphlet 611-21.
