Basic Training
Journal: Sunday, August 10th
We have fireguard right now (12:00am to 1:00am). Our platoon
of 60 is broken down into squads of 15. We're doing fire guard
as squads tonight because someone didn't get up for fireguard
yesterday. Fireguard is usually done by two people. You can
write letters and stuff as long as one person is always looking
around the barracks with their red flashlight.
Sunday is a breeze. We went to breakfast at around 0600 and
went back to the barracks and started cleaning it up. More
on chow...reception was pretty bland and they always served
the same food. It was usually cheeseburgers and a small pizza,
Powerade, fruit, and desert. The Army likes Powerade, at least
at Fort Benning.
Chow at BT is better and you get more variety. Breakfast
is eggs and bacon, potato wedges, french toast, a bunch of
Kellogs cereal, fruit, Powerade, etc.
Lunch and dinner are similiar...chicken, pork chops, mashed
potatoes, potato wedges, salad bar, gelatin, apples, oranges,
desert, Powerade, etc.
If you don't go to church on Sunday you just clean the barracks,
which isn't bad at all. We tightened bunks, buffed the floors,
cleaned the latrine, all that fun stuff. I did my laundry
on Sundays too. Each platoon gets 3 specific days of the week
they can do laundry, and Sunday is a free for all. Some people
said they would offer quartermaster laundry service, but they
didn't offer it to us and we did just fine doing our own laundry
although you had to wait for an open washing machine. You
always have the threat of people stealing your stuff if you
don't guard it, but very few people sat around in the laundry
room guarding their clothes.
